Anthony Yen Abandoned the Standard American Diet to Save His Heart

When Anthony Yen was diagnosed with Heart Disease, he went back to the diet of his Chinese parents to save his heart.

Yen came to the United States in 1949 and began to eat the way Americans eat. Yen was a businessman who owned several oversees manufacturing plants and he ate a diet typical of other businessmen. Yen enjoyed fatty foods like fried chicken, pork chops, roast beef, and chocolate mouse. The fat-rich diet caught up to him in his 50s when he experienced chest tightening and unusual sweating while dancing with his wife on New Year’s Eve. After learning he had experienced Angina and that the arteries to his heart where blocked, he had open heart surgery. Still, Yen recognized the surgery was a temporary solution and he sought Dr. Esselstyn’s experimental dietary approach. Yen was one of Dr. Esselstyn’s original patients who cured his heart disease by adopting a whole food plant based diet. This was essentially the diet of Yen’s Chinese parents who lived to be 95 and 98 years old with healthy hearts. After switching to a plant-based diet, Yen began carrying notecards with translations of his diet when he traveled just in case a waiter or waitress didn’t understand his order. Dr. Esselstyn’s Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease website shares Yen’s success story where Yen saidthat at age 73 he had the blood pressure of an athlete. Yen stated,

“I feel rejuvenated.”

While Yen’s story has been inspiring millions of people with the simple easy cure for heart disease, many in the medical community remain skeptical. Dr. Esselstyn continues to speak, publish, and advocate for the plant-based diet approach to healing. In a 2014 paper in the journal Experimental and Clinical Cardiology Dr. Esselstyn writes,

“The epidemic of cardiovascular disease is nonexistent in cultures which thrive predominantly on whole foods, plant- based nutrition. Is it logical to assume that patients with this disease would be willing to transition to plant-based nutrition and might this transition halt or reverse the disease?

Dr. Esselstyn has spent more than 25 years demonstrating how a plant-based diet can halt and heal heart disease. Yet because so many doctors remain skeptical he continues to share more documented cases of patients who have successfully healed their hearts. The doctor goes onto write:

“Each case demonstrates disease progression and the failure of the standard cardiovascular approaches in contrast to the prompt, powerful and enduring resolution of disease with whole foods, plant-based nutrition. These outcomes constitute an additional mandate that patients with cardiovascular disease be offered a plant-based option which is safe, inexpensive, empowering, and has the potential to end cardiovascular disease epidemic.”

Dr. Esselstyn’s tireless advocacy for a patient’s right to knowledge that would empower them to heal themselves makes him truly another doctor with your heart at heart. <3
